Oshiomhole needs to speak out, or reject the newly included clause in the amended 2007 Pension Rights of the Governor, and Deputy Governor Law. Except, of course, he cherishes a house more than his good name and legacies.
I’m a fan of the immediate past Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole. As a Labour Union leader, he was a dogged fighter, and as a politician, his guts, and frontal approach to national issues, earned him my deep respect. As a result, like Edo people, I fondly call him Oshobaba.
A few days after Oshiomhole and his Deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu, left office, Edo State Lawmakers amended the 2007 Pension Rights of the Governor, and Deputy Governor Law. According to reports, the amendment included a new clause that approved the provision of residential buildings worth N300 million for Oshiomhole, and his Deputy.
On the face of it, the reward appears justified on account of Oshobaba’s sterling performance and legacies, as a two-term Governor. Beyond sentiments, however, it is difficult to justify the largesse, especially for a politician with Oshiomhole’s progressive pedigree.
If Governor Godwin Obaseki, gives his assent to the amended legislation, it would make Oshobaba the latest member of a gang of parasitic ex-Governors, who keep feeding fat on their State’s treasury, while those they served, wallow in abject penury.
Does Oshobaba, a perceived Spartan comrade, want to go down in history as one of the greedy ex-Governors, who armed-twisted their State Assemblies to approve jumbo perks for them? Does he want to be in the same class with the Lucky Igbenedions of this world?
Oshiomhole needs to speak out, or reject the newly included clause in the amended 2007 Pension Rights of the Governor, and Deputy Governor Law. Except, of course, he cherishes a house more than his good name, and legacies.

His silence would tacitly confirm the words of those who claim that he has reinvented godfatherism in Edo State politics. Would Oshiomhole have assented to this same fraudulent amendment, if Lawmakers in favour of his predecessor proposed it?
…isn’t it more logical, and wise to pay the four years pension arrears that the Oshiomhole-led government left behind, than to build magnificent domiciles for him, and his Deputy at the public expense?
It makes no sense to build houses worth N300 million for Oshiomhole, and his Deputy, in this time of recession. With the dwindling monthly allocation to States from the Federal Government, Edo Lawmakers do not need to be told that their decision veers off common sense.
Besides, isn’t it more logical and wise to pay the four years pension arrears, that the Oshiomhole-led government left behind, than to build magnificent domiciles for him, and his Deputy, at the public expense?
If civil servants who served the State for 35 years are expected to build their own houses, why should a Governor, and his Deputy, who served for just eight years, get houses from the State’s coffer? If Edo spends N300 million to build houses for Oshobaba, and his Deputy, who knows if the whole State would have to be mortgaged to build Obaseki, and his Deputy, Burj Khalifas, after their tenure?
Of course, those who eschew common sense, will see nothing wrong in this. That’s fine. But it will not change the public perception that Edo State Lawmakers, only acted out a script written by Oshiomhole, and his successor, Obaseki.
Let’s not forget that Oshiomhole, a former Labour leader, and his Deputy, were not sleeping under bridges before they were elected. As such, they do not need houses worth N300 million, from Edo State, as parting gifts.
Governors, who have succeeded in arm-twisting State Legislatures to further their greed and selfish interests, have only capitalised on the folly of the citizen. Veteran Journalist, Tunde Fagbenle, in a piece entitled, “A sickening country of conscienceless people”, aptly wrote: “We cannot put it all to the leadership. No, we the people, are ourselves, mumus.
“And there must be a time when we all must rise up and say, our mumu don do! The place to start is for the people in each and every State, where such criminal pensions, and perks have been granted to its past leaders, for the people to rise up, and occupy the Assembly of such States, until the obnoxious laws are abrogated”.
