Sequel to the series of meetings held lately between the leaders of the National Assembly, and the President, there are strong indications, that the Legislature might compromise its earlier stance, by offering to approve President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to borrow over N9 trillion, to fund infrastructural projects across the country.
Recall, that the Upper Legislative Chamber, had on Tuesday, November 1, dared President Buhari, as it refused to approve the President’s borrowing plans.
The development attracted wide spread jubilation, as Nigerians hailed the Upper Legislative for the giant stride, questioning the integrity of the President in handling such huge funds, judging from history on how such similar loans were acquired, misappropriated, or embezzled.
‎In a reaction, the Presidency had insisted that it was a change era, and as such, the funds when acquired will be judiciously used to fund Projects and Programmes.
However, in a bid to ease tension, the President had in the last one week, engaged the National Assembly, of which the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were reported to have held series of closed door meetings with the President.

Although, both sides have not formally revealed the outcome of the meetings, there are strong indications that the leadership of the Senate, and the Presidency, might have reached a deal on the 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, earlier rejected by the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, a source close to the leadership of the Senate who gave some clues on the fallout of the meetings, between Buhari, Saraki, and Dogara, on Sunday, noted that the National Assembly had accepted to receive a detailed version of the document from the Executive this week.
He added, that the preparation of the 2017 budget, and the proposed $29.96 billion external borrowing, would be fast-tracked by the Legislature.
Speaking further, the source said the meetings between the leadership of the National Assembly, and the Presidency, were called to bridge the gap between the Legislature and the Executive.
Concurring with the source, Senate Majority Leader, Ali Ndume, has disclosed that the matter would be resolved this week.
Ndume, who made this known to Journalists during the weekend, described the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, and Fiscal Strategy Paper, FSP, earlier sent to the Senate by Buhari for Legislative approval, as “empty”, due to missing details in the document.
“We will deal with the issues this week by God’s grace,” he said.
Asked if the Senate had got a positive response from the Presidency on the issues, he said, “Yes, of course.”
