Many Nigerians and women in particular, have described as unfortunate the recent statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his wife, Aisha as a kitchen material.
To many, Buhari is a sexist with no regard for the womanhood, thereby reducing his wife publicly to a piece of trash in faraway Germany.
Aisha, had in a controversial interview with BBC Hausa, taken a swipe at her husband’s government, saying he didn’t know his appointees.
In a swift reaction, Buhari said that his wife belongs to the kitchen and not the political terrain.
Following Buhari’s controversial statements about his wife, TV personality/entrepreneur, Stephanie Coker in expressing her views on the matter, took to Instagram and wrote:
‘’I feel so privileged to be growing up in an era where women are presidents of countries, women are running conglomerates, women are effortlessly juggling child bearing whilst running billion dollar companies, discovering cures to treating diseases and so many other extraordinary things. No woman should be confined to a kitchen, living room or any “other room”.
“My country has progressed so much in encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams.
To be hearing this in 2016 breaks me and I will speak against it till it is finished”.
Also reacting, Abiodun Olujimi, a female senator from Ekiti State, said President Buhari’s comment was in a “very bad taste” and even more frightening that he said it outside the country.
“The statement is in bad state. Especially, because he was saying it beside one of the most powerful women in the world. That makes it very offensive and very nasty”, she said.
Senator Olujimi, whose gender equality bill is making progress in the Senate, said President Buhari had become notorious for his embarrassing gaffes in foreign land, saying she and other women groups were working on a response to the latest remarks.
“The president is the biggest diplomat a country can have. But we have a president that cannot weigh word especially outside, but instead allowed emotions to becloud good thoughts. That is not in any way acceptable.
“We won’t disparage the president. We won’t bring him down before the world. But, of course, we would look inward and see how we can handle the situation”.
Also, a social media enthusiast, Abang Mercy, circulated Mrs. Jonathan’s statement on Twitter and said Buhari’s comments marked the “height of chauvinism from a president”.
“He just reinforced existing stereotypes especially in Northern Nigeria,” she said.
